Book worm

Do any of the few of you that read this blog have good ideas for books that Nathan and Zoey can read? What books did you enjoy reading when you were in the 3rd-5th grades.

So far, the Nathan’s 2 favorite books he has read this year are Summer of Monkeys and Beauty. He likes them both because he says they have some sad parts in them, and then they make you laugh. I am getting Bridge to Tarabithia for him, but am having a hard time thinking of other books I read way back then.

    Good question!

    - Island of Blue Dolphins, Scott Odell. Maybe for Zoey
Along the theme of “surviving on your own”,
    - My side of the mountain, I think by “George” (last name)
    - Narnia? Or is that too young? – C. S. Lewis
    - The Book of Three series (4 or 5 in all), Lloyd Alexander

Some that are a bit more girly:
the “Shoe” books, I’d start with Ballet Shoes, but there is also Skating Shoes, Dancing Shoes, and some others but those are my favories – by Noel Streatfield. these were out of print for a long time but i think they’re back in print now. fantastic!
    - The Secret Garden &
    - A Little Princess, Francis Burnett
    - EVERYTHING by LM Montgomery, best known for the Anne of Green Gables series, but my favories were Emily of New Moon (series of 3), The Blue Castle,

I’m looking at this list thinking it might be a little old. I’m no judge, I’ll just keep tossing stuff out here anyway:

    trying to think younger:
    Charlotte’s Web,
    Trumpet of the Swan,
    Stuart LIttle, EB White
A Wrinkle in Time, Madeleine L’Engle
Where the Red Fern Grows (maybe too sad, but GREAT BOOK)
Maybe James and the Giant Peach? Anything by Dahl
    Harriet the Spy
    The Prince and the Pauper

    I think I’m out.

    for now!!

Bill Wallace also did a book called “A dog called kitty” that was pretty good.

I’ll stop posting a zillion comments now :)

Thanks for the great suggestions. I always forget about LM Montgomery (who I read all of when younger)and Dahl (whose only book I have read was Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, this year). The Black Stallion books may also be hits. It’s hard knowing what might be too girly for Nathan to want to read.

I read such a wide variety of things at a wide variety of ages that I have a hard time narrowing anything down to a specific age or grade.
That being said, off the top of my head some of my favorite books as a kid that haven’t been mentioned yet were:
“The Great Brain” series by John D. Fitzgerald.
“From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler” by E. L. Konigsburg
    “Steel Magic” by Andre Norton
and one of my all time favorites, “The Westing Game” by Ellen Raskin
