Day Thirty-one – Live long….

366 - day 31

…. and prosper.

He doesn’t even know what Start Trek is.

Day Thirty – Stomach bug

366- day thirty

Missed work today. I hope no one else in the house comes down with it. Word on the street is that they almost closed the schools today because so many kids were out sick.

Day Twenty-nine – Wheels on the bus

366- Not the short one

Today was one of the rare days that I got to pick up the oldest two kiddos from school.

Too much effort

Today while I was editing my photos for Project 366, I actually watched some commercials because it was just too much effort to reach over and fast forward through them.

Here are a few things I noticed. First, I remember when I used to look forward to commercials. Awesome little snippets. Some of them take so much effort create for just 30 seconds worth of viewing (or since dvr’s are in most houses now, non viewing). They also used to be much simpler than they are now, catchy phrases and jingles instead of flash and glamour.

Second, there is some awesome music in commercials. I know this is nothing new, but since I don’t hear them over and over again, some of the songs really stand out. Ingrid Michaelson had some songs, but really didn’t sweep through mainstream until her song was in an Old Navy ad. There is an Apple commercial for the super slim (completely awesome looking) MacBook Air, that has a great song called “New Soul” by Yael Naim. If the commercial is first in line, I’ll listen to it before fast forwarding.

Third, is it weird for anyone else to hear celebrity voices personifying weird random objects? Wanda Sykes as an apple?

Day Twenty-eight – Dirt work

366- day twenty-eight

Our little town is getting its first shopping center. Super exciting stuff!

Menu Plan 1-27-08 through 2-9-08

Brunswick Stew   We didn’t have this last time. I couldn’t find frozen lima beans. This time I have them.
Cheddar Crusted Chicken
Beef Wellington
Pork Chops with Sauteed Apples in Cream
Betsy’s Hungarian Goulash
Chicken & Noodles
Fettuccini
Spaghetti
Tacos
Cowboy Crockpot Stew
Creamy Ham and Broccoli

Not a Casserole

We had this sometime during the past two weeks. Zoey and I had high hopes for it. It looked tasty and smelled delicious. Unfortunately, no one liked it. It wasn’t really awful, but the taste did not live up to the aroma. I thought it was ok, but really bland. Maybe some peas or ham or just some different spices could help it. I won’t be making it again though, because everyone asked for something else to eat.

UIL 2008

This weekend it was time for some academic festivities. Zoey and Nathan were each chosen for different subjects for their grade this year.

Here’s how our Saturday boiled down.
1. Wake up at 6:00 to get everyone to school by 6:45.

2. Drive over an hour away to a tiny town – There was a whole caravan of parents cars following the buses along a tiny highway surrounded by forest.

3. After we arrived, we were packed like sardines in a small elementary cafeteria.

4. Don’t hang out with our children – Nathan and Zoey were hanging out with their friends. For the most part (especially Nathan), they are at the age where it is uncool to be seen with their parents.

5. Find out that award ceremony is not happening – Last year for the UIL academic contest, they had an award ceremony after all of the competitions were over. This year they decided to just randomly announce the winners to the children, parents, and teachers who happened to be in the cafeteria at the time the grading was complete. We already knew that Zoey had placed sixth overall in the Creative Writing section on Thursday. The whole reason Greg, Allison, and I made the trip this year was so that we could all watch the awards being handed out.

6. Stick around all day anyway because the children who don’t want to hang out with you, want you to hear if they placed in something. (Of course, we are curious also)

7. Find out that your children are super smart (like you didn’t already know) – Zoey placed 6th in Creative writing as previously mentioned and 4th in Spelling. Nathan would have placed 7th in Number Sense if there were a 7th place.

8. Sit around a little longer while children decide whether they want to ride bus or not – Nathan and Zoey were required to ride the bus to the event, and could pick whether or not to ride it home again at the end of the day.

9. Leave around 2pm – After the decision has been made to ride the bus that won’t be leaving for two more hours. Of course, they wanted to ride the bus with their friends. They don’t ride the bus to school, so it is like some huge treat for them to ride the bus or something.

10. Drive the hour back home.

11. Send your husband to pick up the kids an hour before they actually get back.

12. Take long nap because you stayed up too late the night before and woke up too early for a Saturday.

Day Twenty-seven – Big bats

366- day twenty-seven

Day Twenty-six – UIL

366- day twenty-six

Today was the big UIL academic contest. I’m pretty sure the boys are playing “go fish” with Uno cards.
