Did you know that on your eleventh wedding anniversary you are supposed to get steel? Here, have a chunk of steel. I didn’t. I guess that could be interpreted as a car or something. Somehow, Greg and I managed to buy appropriate gifts without realizing it. I got him a harmonica. He got me some non-stick skillets (our old ones were wearing out). Before you ask, yes, cookware is a perfectly acceptable gift, if the recipient enjoys cooking.

I skipped this rotation of posting our meal plan. Slacker. I know. Here are a few of the meals we have eaten over the past two weeks.I’m going to leave out our staple meals. You know, fettuccine, spaghetti, tacos. If we liked them, I’ll give them a separate entry with the recipe a little later.
On Valentine’s day we had pizza! Cute, Heart-shaped, stuffed crust pizza. Did you know that all you have to do to make stuffed crust is roll the edges of your pizza dough over a string cheese stick? I split them in half, then roll it. But it’s so much less expensive than Pizza Hut and since they don’t deliver in our tiny town, it’s less work to just make our own than it is to order it and drive to get it.
Let’s see. It’s much harder to remember what I fixed after the fact.
Creamy Ham and Broccoli – It wasn’t awful, but it wasn’t great either. It was more like a side dish than a whole meal.
Chicken enchilada soup – I need to type up my recipe for this one. It’s also a staple but I just throw a bunch of stuff together. We had this with some tasty cornbread.
Beef and Napa Cabbage Stir Fry – This was pretty tasty. Everyone liked it, so it will be getting it’s own review a little later.
So, I kind of left you guys hanging on whether or not we “set the bunny free in the pasture”. We didn’t. It’s doing fine and if you saw yesterday’s Project 366 photo, then you know that there are now two of them. It’s true, rabbits multiply quickly. I was expecting there to be another waiting when I came home from work this afternoon. I was relieved that this wasnt’ the case.
Chances are high that we will be keeping both bunnies for a month or two. Partly because everyone else thinks they are too adorable and cute. Don’t get me wrong, I also think they are cute, to an extent. I don’t look forward to caring for them and think that rabbits are terrors in a garden. Last year we got the girls a rabbit named Max. It is said that you can house train them and that they are relatively clean. Maybe we were doing something wrong, but I thought taking care of that rabbit was disgusting. We set it free. It is entirely possible that these baby bunnies are the offspring of Max.
The other reason to keep them is because we all think it will be an interesting experiment to see how much they grow over the next few weeks. These guys are tiny. We want to give them a decent chance of outrunning LT. Also, if he gets used to their smell and being around them, maybe he will be less inclined to retrieve them for us.
Warning: this content maybe somewhat unpleasant.
This morning, just like every morning, we let LT outside. He roams free for about 15 minutes (long enough to do what a dog’s got to do), then we bring him inside or put him on his line, depending on the weather.
Today, every few seconds we heard a squeaker toy sound. He has a few of them, so it was no big deal. As we were heading to the car and to put LT on his line, Nathan noticed that he wasn’t playing with any of his toys. He called me out and I thought he was playing with a mouse. He thought he had made a new friend. He would catch it, then let it go. After the second time, I realized it wasn’t a mouse. Instead, he was playing with a teeny-tiny bunny.
I was shocked. We quickly took LT to his line (far from where the baby bunny was) and watched the tiny furry thing hop a bit. It appeared to be undamaged. Nathan and I hoped that it didn’t get close enough to LT that it would really get hurt.
So, a couple of disclaimers:
We live in the country, where there are an abundance of cute innocent looking rabbits.
LT is a dog, and it is in his instinct to track and chase tiny furry creatures.
He found the bunny again this afternoon. We saw him go into some brush behind our garden plot and just knew what he was doing. Greg called him over and of course, he had the little rabbit. For the bunny’s own safety, we brought him inside and put him in our old rabbit cage.
The girls are worried for it and want to keep it as a pet. Allison has already decided that it’s name should be Squeakers. We’ve told them that we may have to set it free before anyone wakes up and also before we let LT out. I hope we don’t have to use that story and the bunny really is unhurt. That it escaped once after being a 70lb dog’s playmate was pretty lucky. I hope it succeeds again.
