The fund raiser this year for softball was cookie selling. You may not already know this about me, but I am like the cookie monster. I love cookies. If they are around, I will eat them and eat them and eat some more. Thank goodness not all of these are for our house. If they were, I could easily gain a few pounds. I think I already have, just looking at them.
Monthly Archive for May, 2008
A few months ago, Nathan started complaining about an upset stomach. There were no fevers or sickness, just belly aches. At first we thought it was nothing and that it would just go away. It wasn’t constant, it would go away, and then two weeks later might come back. It took us a little while to realize that maybe there was something else happening. Last month we decided that it wasn’t just going away.
He had a visit with the doctor’s office where they asked some interesting questions.
Is it worse when you are nervous or in a stressful situation? (it was, that’s part of the reason we scheduled the appointment)
Do you cough at night? He does. We just thought this was asthma, but according to some research, this could be a trigger for Acid Reflux.
Here’s some information I found on one of the many websites during my research.
Many nerves are in the lower esophagus. Some of these nerves are stimulated by the refluxed acid, and this stimulation results in pain (usually heartburn). Other nerves that are stimulated do not produce pain. Instead, they stimulate yet other nerves that provoke coughing. In this way, refluxed liquid can cause coughing without ever reaching the throat! In a similar manner, reflux into the lower esophagus can stimulate esophageal nerves that connect to and can stimulate nerves going to the lungs. These nerves to the lungs then can cause the smaller breathing tubes to narrow, resulting in an attack of asthma.
What this means is that we have been trying to change some of our eating styles. It’s not that we eat unhealthy, but whatever helps, you know? The main problem is that according to one site, almost everything we eat triggers heartburn. Hamburgers? on the list. Our go-to, quick fix meal Spaghetti? on there too. Nathan’s favorite mac and cheese? Sorry kid, you’re out of luck.
Really, it has been getting better. We can tell that Nathan has been feeling healthier, is getting better sleep at night, and because of that, hasn’t been nearly as moody* lately. This week however, we have been terrible. Eating fast food in between one person’s practice and the other’s game or just grabbing dinner at the ball park. Poor Nathan’s stomach. It has made an audible difference. When I woke him up this morning, I could hear his stomach rolling around. I promised him that we would have healthy dinners the rest of the week. He looked visibly relieved.
So, do any of you have a good recipe that shouldn’t cause heartburn you can pass my way?
*Why didn’t anyone warn us that eleven is when the moodiness starts? While talking with other parents from his baseball team, each of us realized it wasn’t just our son on an emotional roller coaster.
Found by the swingset. Thank goodness it’s just a garden snake and not copperheads like we usually see.
