Excuse the mess

I have found myself coming home from work and just vegging out in my free time. For the past week, I haven’t really done anything creative. No drawing, no writing, no sewing, new crafting. The only reason we have tried new meals is because I plan most of our dinners for a two week period. I’ve taken pictures everyday, but none of them seem artistic.

I have some things I want to write about, but I’m not really sure how to type them up in a coherent manner. I’m sure the words will come eventually but, did you see that non-creative stuff up there?

Reading through that, it sounds kind of depressing, but really, it’s just some kind of creativity block. I suppose it’s a good time for it. In the next few weeks spring sports start, so we will be busy again. Plenty of blog fodder. I hope you don’t mind hearing about baseball and softball. Do any of you ever find yourselves with periods when you do nothing but veg out?

Too much effort

Today while I was editing my photos for Project 366, I actually watched some commercials because it was just too much effort to reach over and fast forward through them.

Here are a few things I noticed. First, I remember when I used to look forward to commercials. Awesome little snippets. Some of them take so much effort create for just 30 seconds worth of viewing (or since dvr’s are in most houses now, non viewing). They also used to be much simpler than they are now, catchy phrases and jingles instead of flash and glamour.

Second, there is some awesome music in commercials. I know this is nothing new, but since I don’t hear them over and over again, some of the songs really stand out. Ingrid Michaelson had some songs, but really didn’t sweep through mainstream until her song was in an Old Navy ad. There is an Apple commercial for the super slim (completely awesome looking) MacBook Air, that has a great song called “New Soul” by Yael Naim. If the commercial is first in line, I’ll listen to it before fast forwarding.

Third, is it weird for anyone else to hear celebrity voices personifying weird random objects? Wanda Sykes as an apple?

Laughing loudly

Tonight, Allison and I went to watch a movie together. She absolutely loved it. As we were walking back to the car, she told me that it was, “THE BEST MOVIE EVER!!!!!!”. With just that many exclamation points. This from a girl whose usually insists that her movies contain at least one super hero.

I’ve talked about it a few times before, but it never gets old. I love going to kid movies with my kids when the rest of the audience is also primarily children. They get so into the movie. When things are funny, the whole theater shakes with laughter. Amazing kid laughter. Or, like during this movie, when the introduction to a show comes on the television that all of the children in the theater know, they all chant along with the theme song.

Allison didn’t just do her normal laughter though. She came prepared with some kind of crazy yelling laugh that went on and on. It made the people in the row directly in front of us turn around a laugh with her. It was adorable, but I can’t even describe it, it was that obnoxious. I had to explain to her that her normal laugh would work just fine, other people wanted to hear the movie too and the chipmunks would still appreciate her efforts.

What’s your take on going to movies made for children in the theater? Do the kids annoy you (maybe you should go to the late night viewings)? Or does it make the whole experience even better?

Also, since you asked. I’ve managed to keep up the project 366 for two whole weeks. Only 50 more weeks to go! Oh, there’s a new recipe up over at the Food Stuff pages too. Enjoy.

Delurk!

Pop out from behind those bushes, and say “Hi!”.

delurkerday.jpg

It’s National Delurking day. That means if you normally sit back and just read the site, today’s the day to let me know you stop by every once in a while. You don’t have to feel obligated to keep it up. I know there are lots of sites that I just read for the fun of it and a few I comment on regularly. Today, I’m going to try and say something on each one of them. Join in the fun!

Grocery store observation

When I use a cart, I open up the child seat part and plop my purse down into it. It’s not that my purse is heavy or anything. It is just a handy little purse holder. It made me wonder how many other people do the same thing. As I was walking around I noticed that almost every other woman who was shopping had their purse in the same spot. If there were children seated in the cart, they shared with their mother’s purse. Does this mean we equate our handbags with our children?

So, do you (or a woman in your life) carry your purse or push it around in the shopping cart?

Change is good

I’m thinking of making some changes to this little space. Not that the layout isn’t great, it’s just slightly worn out. I may or may not also be upgrading version of the blogging software used. It all depends on how it goes on the test server. It won’t be immediate, but if things look a little wonky in the next few days, don’t say I didn’t warn you.

For a while, I was trying a new recipe about once a week. I didn’t always blog about it, but trust me, it happened. I want to get back into doing this and, like the Did They Eat It section of Suburban Bliss, keep track of reactions to the new concoctions. I have a horrible memory and maybe this will help me keep track of what we all like to eat and don’t.

Even though it’s kind of old news and has been done by so many people, I think it would be a fun experiment to try and take a photo every day for a year. Of course, by doing it this year, it will really be project 366 instead of 365. I think most people take self-portraits. That’s probably not going to happen. Since I have my pocket camera, I have no excuse to not snap some kind of picture throughout the day.

I’m looking forward to the new stuff already.

Sneaky little beast

Did you know that Christmas is only 4 days away? How did this happen?

It’s not even the right kind of weather for it. It’s been in the upper 70′s all week. Shorts weather. Although, maybe I just need to get used to the fact that we now live in a place where it really only gets cold for about a week in February. Those two nights that the temperature dropped into the 30′s last week were a huge fluke.

I completely dropped the ball on Christmas cards. I bought them, but never actually: took a family picture to include, signed, or addressed any of them. Looks like I won’t have to pick any out for next year. We’re all set. If you were looking forward to receiving a card from us, sorry to dash your hopes.

crazy-tree

Let’s not even really talk about presents. Sure, our kids are set. We have been receiving packages from far away relatives for the past few weeks. Allison expressed her worries this morning that we may have so many presents that Santa won’t visit.

We may have finished our shopping yesterday, but in all likelihood, there will be another trip to the big store for last minute items. I had big hopes of making fantastic presents for all of my nephews. Instead, I barely managed to find something and get it shipped out in time. Hopefully they will be delivered via the brown trucks by Christmas Eve. Thanks for working just for me, guys!

So, is it just me, or was Christmas entirely too sneaky this year? Please, tell me that I’m not the only one completely caught off guard.

Going to the chapel

That old saying, Always a bridesmaid never a bride? Were you a bride if you didn’t have a wedding ceremony and visited the judge?

As previously mentioned, last weekend Allison and I were both members of a wedding party. Since this wasn’t her first time, Allison was excited about meeting some new flower girl friends showing them just what to do.

The tiny little country church was decorated all Christmas-y with pretty trees and candles. The wedding went off without a hitch and contained mostly the same elements that all weddings do. It was short and sweet. The bride and groom looked happy and in love.

All dressed up

Elusive

We have been trying to find a gift for the kids. We know exactly what it is. It’s the only gift all three of them really want this year. Many of their other presents are based off of this gift. It is just never in stock – anywhere. We have woken up at five in the morning to drive an hour and a half away to stand in a line that some crazy people must have camped out in the night before to be one of the first twenty. We have people in three states keeping an eye out for us. I’m sure stores are getting sick of people like me calling every day to see if they have received any shipments of this gift.

Yesterday afternoon, I decided to call all of the stores in our region to see if they could tell me when they expected the latest batch to arrive. As fate would have it, Best Buy had, at that very minute, received a truck. We knew that there was no chance one would be left in an hour and Best Buy could not hold one for us. Darn our luck, these things don’t even make it to the shelves. Someone Greg knows said they would drive over and get it for us, and walk around the store until he could get there to pay for the sucker.

It was like everything was coming together. We wouldn’t have to print a picture of the gift and wrap it up in a box with a note saying, “As soon as we find one, it’s yours”. It would have worked out perfectly, if Greg hadn’t gotten a call about five minutes after he left the house letting him know that they had just sold the last one to the lady right in front of his friend.

Looks like an empty box it is, unless Greg decides he really doesn’t mind waking up at four in the morning to wait in line on Sunday.

Excuses, excuses

It wasn’t my intention to give up posting after writing something every day, but it just kind of happened. I’ve put in a few long days and nights at the office and haven’t had time to surf the net, let alone write a post. All that you would have gotten was geeky work stuff. I’m not going to completely bore you with talk of setting up new servers and all of the stuff that goes along with it (mostly because I was winging it with some help from one of Greg’s brothers, Thanks Jeremi!). Starting today, I hope to get back to posting almost every day again.

There should be plenty of things to talk about. Have I mentioned yet that Allison and I are going to be in a wedding next week? One of the girls I work with is getting married and asked me to be a bridesmaid. Allison’s an old pro at being a flower girl, but I’m pretty sure it’s my first time to be in a wedding. It should be fun.
